Jack's father was a member of a secret organization who protected the human world from the dead world's spirits — whether they needed a gentle guide home, having accidentally fallen through the Veil; or needed to be forcefully exorcised. This was done through a combo of holy runes, holy rites, and holy weaponry — blessed by the spiritual order fashioned centuries ago.
After wounding Aku to the point of forcing a retreat, the portal he used to escape accidentally pulled Jack's father in with him — and Jack, panicking, tried to pull him out before he was pulled in as well.
When Jack found his father in the dead world, the man was dying — succumbing to the wounds he sustained in the fight with Aku. In his final moments, he gave Jack the rundown on what was going on and what he had to do — giving Jack his holy weapon to use.
>> the weapon gets stronger by absorbing the power of spirits it exorcises — the more spirits he defeats, the stronger Jack's body & attacks become. This is marked physically by runes along his weapon.
The weapon can change shape using these powers? To allow for different play styles: heavy, ranged, light, etc.
>> the Divine Beasts (excluding Aku) are optional bosses for Jack to fight — exorcising them creates runes on his body, as their spirits are too great for his weapon to wholly contain. He can then use their powers in combat and/or exploration, and doing so changes his appearance for the duration of the ability.
Should Jack exorcise too many of the Divine Beasts, he won't be able to leave the dead world at the end of the game (alternate ending option) — as he'll be more spirit than human — however his final fight against Aku will be significantly easier.
Jack himself is a fit young adult who knows his way around a fight — albeit he's a bit out of his depth when he first starts fighting spirits. His initial motivation for defeating Aku is to use his power to get back home: however through the story he grows closer to his father's ideals and desires to defeat Aku to save the human world.
