AKU;
>> One of seven Divine Beasts who were worshipped as deities in eras past (in a time where the nameless world had living inhabitants and not just spirits / shades). Of the seven, Aku specifically craved the power he once held over a population — feeding off of fear and subjugation.

Aku found out about Jack's world and entered in his "human" / disguised form, pleased to discover it was full of people and he set his sights on making it his own. He was confronted by Jack's father — a protector of their world from the dead world's spirits — and while he managed to wound Aku enough to force a retreat, he lost his life in doing so.
Aku retreated to the dead world to regain his strength and make a plan to return in full force, accidentally pulling Jack in through the portal with him. Jack, then, must defeat Aku in order to return home and save said home.
>> Aku uses "masks" to change shape and/or augment his current abilities. These masks are pieces of stone or wood that he wears as armor, and appear to have the faces of people or beasts etched into them. These are trophies from creatures he's defeated, and allow him to use their powers as his own.
He prefers smaller, serpentine forms, allowing him to lurk in shadows and ambush unsuspecting prey. His true form is gargantuan, and he only reverts to it when he needs to utilize an overwhelming display of power — such as bringing a population to its knees, or in the final stages of a boss battle.
